A vaginal yeast infection occurs as a fungus or yeast, usually Candida albicans , it begins to grow in the vagina. This type of infection is very common but can become serious very frequent.
A healthy vagina has many bacteria, and a small number of fungal cells. The most bacteria present in the organ, called Lactobacillus acidophilus, is responsible for maintaining balanced vaginal flora and prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi in the vagina.
When any internal or external factor alters the balance of these organisms, fungi can multiply in the vaginal canal and cause symptoms. The prolonged use of antibiotics, for example, can cause this imbalance. The high estrogen levels caused by pregnancy or hormone therapy may also be responsible as well as certain diseases, such as, for example, diabetes and HIV infection.
Approximately one in five women have experienced a vaginal yeast infection at some point in life. Many of them suffer from the problem twice or more.
A vaginal yeast infection is not considered sexually transmitted, however, the fungus that causes this condition can be spread through oral-genital contact. It is easily treated, except in cases where it is sought - four or more times a year - when it is required continuous therapy for health maintenance.
Causes
The vaginal yeast infection is usually caused by Candida albicans, a micro-organism that is normally present in the vagina along with other bacteria. It can also be found in the skin and intestine. The vagina naturally contains a balanced mixture of yeast and bacteria, called vaginal flora. Bacteria Lactobacillus produce an acid that discourages yeast overgrowth in the vagina, thus helping to maintain the balance of vaginal flora. However, this balancing rupture may result in the overgrowth of yeast.
The vaginal fungal infection can be caused by:
Use of antibiotics
Pregnancy
Uncontrolled diabetes
Compromised immune system
All that changes the type and amount of bacteria in the vaginal flora, such as frequent vaginal douches or inadequate lubrication.
Most often, the vaginal infection is caused by the fungus Candida albicans. However, in some cases the infection could be happening by another type of fungus. These usually respond poorly to conventional therapies and may require more aggressive treatment.
Most infections can be transmitted sexually, especially through oral-genital sexual contact. However, the fungal infection is not considered a sexually transmitted disease, since the fungus is naturally present in the vagina and can occur in women who are not sexually active.
